Direct string magnetic gradiometer for space applications

چکیده
Recently, a novel Direct String Magnetic Gradiometer (DSMG) has been developed, where a vibrating wire, driven by an AC current, is used as a single sensitive element. It is designed to directly measure the local off-diagonal components of the magnetic gradient tensor, Bxz, Byz and Bxy, provided the distance to an object creating magnetic anomalies is much larger than the length of the string. This requirement is well satisfied in space, if the sensor is deployed from a satellite platform orbiting near the planet under surveillance. Current instruments operating at 1 kPa pressure achieve sensitivity of 1.8×10−10 T/m in the band 0.0001 Hz to 0.1 Hz. In this paper we show that proposed modifications to the current gradiometer design, specifically aimed at the deployment in space, could have a magnetic gradient sensitivity better than 10T/m/ √ Hz in the frequency range of interest for specific missions both for fundamental research and for such applications as geophysical exploration on Mars and other solar system planets. Also, by combining a few single-axis magnetic gradiometer modules, it is possible to deploy a full tensor magnetic gradiometer.

3-D Inversion of gravity gradiometer data
We present the development of an algorithm for inverting multi-component gravity gradiometer data to recover three-dimensional (3-D) distributions of density contrast for salt imaging. The algorithm is a direct adaptation of the author’s earlier work on 3-D inversion of magnetic data. The underlying method is based upon a regularized inversion that constructs a density contrast distribution hav...
متن کاملMagnetic Sensor Operation Onboard a UUV: Magnetic Noise Investigation using a Total-Field Gradiometer
To operate a magnetic sensor on board an Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV), it is necessary to provide a means for compensating magnetic noise from a variety of sources. In previous applications involving passively towed platforms, the noise arises from the magnetic fields due to eddy currents and magnetic polarization changes occurring due to rotation of the platform in the earth’s magnetic fi...

Gradiometer resembles in functionality a magnetic field sensor where it measures the magnetic field gradient and its sensitivity is determined by the ability to quantify differential voltage change with respect to a reference value. Magnetoelectric (ME) gradiometer designed in this study is based upon the nickel (Ni)-Pb(Zr,Ti)O(3) (PZT) composites and utilizes the ring-dot piezoelectric transfo...

The detection of dipole-like sources, such as unexploded ordnances (UXO) and other metallic objects, based on a magnetic gradiometer system, has been increasingly applied in recent years. In this paper, a novel dipole-like source detection algorithm, based on eigenvector analysis with magnetic gradient tensor data interpretation is presented. Firstly, the theoretical basis of the eigenvector de...
